Recurring Themes: direction, decisions, action, results

I have been reflecting on some recent clients we've been working with and some basic themes keep recurring:
  1. What is your 'Vision' for the business? - Where the heck are we going? What will success look like?
  2. Make the Tough Decisions - What are we going to decide to do (and when)? What are the quick wins? What are the slow burns?
  3. Take Massive Action - Who is going to do what (and when)? Just do it!
  4. Monitor/Evaluate the Results - What will we achieve? How will we know we have got there?

That's it. All else is commentary.

Mr C is back from hols with a hidden little blog post.

Well, as per usual, you have stated the blindingly obvious. But it needed stating.

Your simple list is right on the money.

As a consultant to growing businesses (not part of a Bus Link) I think you have succeeded in crystallising the key areas of weakness in our customer-clients. Without going on about it I know you hate the word vision and was surprised to see you using it. Maybe I am being pedantic. Aside from that you have made obvious the obvious. Maybe you should have the word passion in there somewhere or is that just too over-used? Thank you.

JM and Robert

I am an MD of a company, 25 staff, and I battle with all the things you talk about. For me I cannot get myself sorted out so I never get around to doing what you are talking about in such a structured manner. At least not in a stuctured way. You make it all sound so easy.

I have only been running the business for about 18 months and I am a young director. I do struggle with staying on top of things and although I know that I need to get organised I still struggle. I am aware that my lack of organisation is starting to impact on the business.

It is one thing to talk about these fine words but the reality of 'winning' is something else.

It sounds like you know what you need to work on. You need to get your priorities sorted out so that the business can thrive. This sounds like one of those people on the Dog Whisperer programme who complain about the dog when the problem is themselves. Get yiourself a decent mentor/coach to get you focussed on what matters. Unless of course you can't be bothered. Your Choice.

Dear TS of Taunton

Get your act together.

Yes, a mentor/coach/book/whatever will help but it is really up to you. Your choice. You are the one to take the action. Just like giving up smoking/drinking/drugs. Do you want to do it badly enough.
