On a more serious note. Maybe Robert has got it wrong. No-one else seems to agree.

1) My daughter works at Pizza Express. The staff there are hacked off. Tips make up their real wage. Tips from cheapskates that dothe BOGOF deal are 5% of the total bill. Her tips are now 25% of what they were because 5% of a half-price meal is 25%. Too much like hard work so she is leaving.
2) If Pizza Express can survive by in effect halving their prices then it doees make you wonder just how big there margins were before.
So, they've been screwing their customers for years and now they are screwing thier staff. For these at reasons I will not frequent them any more. Robert can keep his slave labour tickets.

It feels uncomfortable to see just how big the discounts can be and still they seem to make a profit.
My knowledge of economics isn't that great but the fixed costs don't change in a recession.
The only conclusion is
1) they were making excess profits before
2) they are about to go bust because they are barely covering their costs
3) there is a 'follow the leader' thing going on. The blind leading the blind.
4) thy are blindly chasing cash because they failed to bank any in the good years
